Hi, my name is Joey. I am a 3-year-old male Chihuahua mix and I weigh 8 pounds. I have begun to blossom in my foster home and I need a new home willing to be patient and to continue to help me become a relaxed, confident dog. I will need a dog-savvy person and if you are a Chihuahua-experienced person even better! You see, in my first home I wasn't taught about meeting new people and going places. They didn't even teach me to go outside or walk on a leash. So, when my person could no longer care for me, I was left at the shelter. I was VERY scared!! SBRET wanted to give me a chance to learn that the real world isn't scary at all so they sent my foster mom to get me. Let me tell you, my foster mom was as overwhelmed as me! She is learning how to help me and I am learning that she is a friend. At first she couldn't pick me up without me peeing in fear and she definitely couldn't put me on a leash. But she let me go at my own pace and I am slowly coming around. Now I love to sit on the sofa with her and get back rubs and scratches. I'll even jump up on my own but sometimes I don't think I can make the jump and she gently picks me up. I still get nervous about being picked up if she is standing and I dance all around instead of being still. With practice I'm sure I'll get better at this too. I will go outside in the fenced yard with her and the other dogs now. It is kinda nice to hang out in the sun and run around a bit. I have a pretty cool indoor space to stay in at night and when no one is home. And sometimes I bark about being left (apartment life probably isn't a good fit for me) but I settle down if I'm ignored. I am also trained to use puppy pads and I am pretty good at always using them. I actually won't go potty outside yet so they are a must in my new home. I will also require a fenced yard so I can continue to go outside and experience new things. I am starting to learn how to walk on a leash and my new owners will also need to agree to help me with that. I think my foster dad is okay but I definitely prefer my foster mom. I am going to need a home with no small children and not much commotion. I am still just to nervous to deal with those things. I am ok with other dogs but do not require one in my forever home. I have been neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on vaccines and heartworm/flea prevention. My adoption fee is $175.
