Hello, they call me Speedy! I am a very affectionate, 4-year-old, male Chihuahua mix. At my last weigh-in, I was 7.5 pounds. When surrendered to SBRET, I had an old untreated rear leg injury and it was decided by the vet that my leg needed to be amputated. I’ve recovered well from the surgery and get around on three legs almost as easily as when I had four good legs. Plus, I’m a funny little guy who can do a walking handstand while I pee. Who does that?!! Though I love people, and cuddling is my favorite activity, I still remember the pain from my lost leg and how it hurt when I was touched. Now, no matter how gently I’m touched or picked up, I initially yelp a bit. As I learn to trust each person, my yipping gets less, but I may always be a little vocal in that way. Even though I feel safe with my foster mom and dad, I still give them an occasional yelp just to keep them on their toes. :)
My potty training needs work, but I do well if taken outside every 2-3 hours. I can wear a belly band inside too just to be sure there are no accidents. I am crate-trained and love the little bed my foster mom added for me. I feel safe when left there for a few hours during the day, and I sleep all night in it. For the first few days in my foster home, I had to be coaxed out of my crate because of anxiety, but luring me with a treat or just pulling out my little bed with me in it did the trick. It didn't take long for me to come out on my own if given a little space.
I need someone who will be patient and calm as I learn to trust their touch. And because of needing help with my potty training, I’d do best if my forever person were retired or had flexible work hours. I do well on a leash, but I sometimes take a little more time to do my business. I need someone who is OK to walk longer if needed, or who has a fenced yard. And because of my anxieties, an adult-only home would be best. I get along well with other dogs my size, but I’d be happy to be your only one. If you think you are the forever person for me, contact SBRET and ask for Speedy. I am neutered, microchipped, up to date on all of my vaccines, heartworm and flea prevention, and my adoption fee is only $175.
