Hello, my name is Gertie. I am a sweet 6-year-old, 11-pound female Chihuahua mix. I am looking for someone to make me feel safe and loved in a forever home.
I came to SBRET from a very bad hoarding situation where I was found neglected along with 70 other dogs. I think you will understand from my background that when I arrived at my foster parents’ home, I was very worried, and I needed time to get to know them before I felt safe enough to interact. This is why I will need a few days to warm up to you and I will probably stay in my crate (with the door open), so be patient. I will be worried at first until I know you will take good care of me and then, I will be SO ready to come to you for cuddles and pets. I have made great strides in my foster home. I come right up to my foster mom and dad and ask them to pick me up. I sleep with them at night. They allow me to burrow under their blankets and I sleep comfy and warm all night long. I am doing really well with housetraining. I go potty outside every time I’m taken out which is quite frequently. I have had some occasional accidents, but my foster mom is really impressed with how potty trained I seem to be. I’m a really laid back and chill girl throughout the day.
Even though I have opened up and have enjoyed being with my foster family, I’m still working on a few things. A fenced-in yard is required because until I trust you, I will not like a leash or harness, although I now wear one everyday. I used potty pads in an inside pen until I felt safe enough to go out with my foster family. Once I trust you and know you are my parent, I will stick right with you inside and out. To keep me safe, you need to stay with me when you take me out. I’m currently working on going for walks on a leash. I’m making progress and I’m open to more practice. When I’m left alone, I stay in a room with a big window with some other dog friends. I enjoy being around other dogs and get along well with them. I usually sleep the whole time when my people are away from the house. Another thing I’m working on is riding in the car. I sometimes whine as I can be a nervous Nelly, but I am also open to working on this as well. I’ve only ridden in the car in a crate so I may do better with a booster seat.
I wasn’t well taken care of in the past, so I will require baths with medicated shampoo for a while just until my skin is back in tip top shape. This will not be a long term thing and my shampoo is very affordable. Overall, I’m a really good girl that is loving, cuddly, and will always be happy to see you. I just need a short time to show you what an awesome pet I will be!
I’m up to date on my flea/heartworm preventions and my vaccines. I am spayed and microchipped. My adoption fee is $175.
