Adoption Area: East Tennessee

Elise needs: Hello, I’m called Elise. I am an 8-year-old Yorkshire Terrier and I weigh just a little over 10 pounds.

I was rescued from a puppy mill where I was a working girl. I received minimal medical care and no socialization. I was made to live in a cage and bear litter after litter.

That life takes a toll on a girl! When I first came to Small Breed Rescue, I was quite ill. I have a condition called Intestinal Lymphangiectasia – also known as Protein-Losing Enteropathy. For this reason, I must eat a special dog food and can never, ever have treats or people food, even though I would love nothing more! With lots of time and a few little setbacks, I am controlling this condition with diet alone. I am happy that I no longer have to take medicine all the time to stay healthy.

I am hoping to find a forever home where I will be loved, and get lots of attention. I have been in foster care for quite a while and my foster family has helped me to become much more social than I was at first. But I am still very hesitant to meet strangers. Once I get to know and trust you, I am a very affectionate girl.

I have been working awfully hard on my potty training and have gone for weeks with no accidents, only to get upset by a change in my environment and have an uh-oh moment. Therefore, I need someone to be with me most of the time to give me frequent trips outside to reinforce the potty training.

Now that I am comfortable in my foster home, I have found my voice, and fallen in love with it. Foster mom says “Hush, Elise” a lot!! And when I am sure I have her undivided attention, I do hush. I was never barking because I was mad or anything, I just want to be the center of attention. For this reason, I’m probably not cut out for apartment dwelling. And I would be happiest if someone could stay home and dote on me.

Please don’t think I am a trouble dog – I have so many good qualities! I like to sleep in my own bed, not yours, and most of the time I sleep quietly through the night. I get along well with other dogs. I like to go for rides in the car, and if you bring me out and about, I will be a good girl and make you proud. I do not tear things up or chew on people things. I walk well on a leash. I really have a lot going for me. Oh, and did I mention that I am drop dead gorgeous??

I am eager to start the next chapter of my life. I have been spayed and microchipped. I am up to date on all my vaccinations, flea, tick, and heartworm preventives. My adoption fee is $175.
