•  Someone home part of the day so that I am not alone for long periods of time
• Someone who will follow up with a vet visit to ensure that heartworm treatment has been successful

My name is Jack, and I am a 5 to 7-yr old, 12-pound male Shih Tzu mix. When I came to SBRET I had been neglected for a while and was underweight and heartworm positive. I have been treated for the heartworm infection and will need a recheck in the next few months to make sure I am heartworm-free. I’ve put on a little weight now and am feeling stronger and more energetic every day.

I am a handsome, laid-back fellow with a beautiful brown coat and somewhat wiry hair that will need a bath and trim every now and then, with brushings in between. My legs are shortish and my body is longish, which just adds to my Fozzie Bear charm. I’ve had to stay quiet during heartworm treatment but as I get healthier you can teach me how to run and play and take fun walks with you. I do have a favorite toy (my foster parents call it my “support bug”) that I carry around with me and look for if it is not nearby. I am a bit hard of hearing, probably due to untreated ear infections in my past.

I do fine on a leash and have learned that a crate is okay for sleeping and for when my foster family is away from home. I may grow anxious, though, if you are gone for too long. I will need to learn to trust that you will be back. I don’t love car rides; I tolerate them and may whimper a bit until we get where we’re going. I am housetrained and will do well with a set routine.

I am a good boy who gets along well with other dogs, children and adults. I am looking forward to finding my forever home – being loved and loving you back. I am neutered, microchipped and up to date on my vaccines and flea and heartworm prevention. My adoption fee is $175. See you soon!
