Scottie needs:
- A calm adult household
- Can be an only dog or with a gentle small senior dog
- Someone who is typically home most of the day (or he gets barky)
- No apartments or condos (due to barking when you leave)
- Regular grooming and baths
Hi, I’m Scottie! I’m a sweet, little 6-pound male Maltese mix who is estimated to be about 12 years old. I am completely deaf (thunderstorms and fireworks are no problem for me!) and my eyes are a bit cloudy, but I can still see pretty well. I also have some congestion so I sometimes sneeze or make snorty noises. This doesn’t seem to be a serious problem for me and it might get better with time, now that I am being well cared for.
I am housebroken and am happy to go outside or on potty pads in the house. I tend to pee and/or poop about every couple of hours during the day. I generally do not bark very much, but I sometimes bark pretty loudly when I need to poop. I can’t tell how loudly I am barking, but my foster parent tells me I am loud! I sometimes bark when I am hungry, too, if I think it is time for you to feed me. When I am left alone in the house, I might also bark, though usually I sleep.
My back legs are weak, so I need to be carried up and down any steps and should not be allowed to jump off furniture. I sometimes enjoy very short walks on level ground or pavement (when it is not too hot), but beyond that, I prefer to ride in a pet stroller, or to be carried, to take in the sights and sounds of a walk. I am a good car rider, in a pet carrier or hooked into a pet carseat, though you need to be prepared for my loud barks if I decide I need to go potty.
I love to sleep in the sun and to sit on peoples’ laps and get petted. I prefer a calm environment where I do not feel threatened by bigger or more playful dogs, so if there is another dog in the home it needs to be a small senior like me. At night I sleep quietly in a dog bed on the floor next to my foster parent’s bed, though I might like to sleep with my adopter, if it is allowed. I would need to be able to get up at night to access potty pads, though, so a ramp that I am able to walk up and down would likely be necessary.
Once I get to know you, I will follow you around the house (unless I am fast asleep) and you will occasionally get a glimpse of my playful side if you toss a small soft toy around or use it to engage me in a tug-of-war. I am an excellent eater, but only if you feed me a kind of dog food I like. Otherwise, I might not eat at all and just hope the next meal is better. Though I am a picky eater, I am generous with tail wags and little licks of appreciation.
If you have a big heart for this small senior dog, please fill out an application and ask for me. I’ve been neutered, microchipped and I’m up-to-date on all my vaccines and preventatives. My adoption fee is $100.
