Basil

Adoption Area: East Tennessee

Basil needs:

  • An adult home or one with children 12 years or older
  • Someone home most of the day or another small dog as Basil has some anxiety at being left
  • A secure fenced yard would be nice, although Basil walks well on a leash
  • Needs professional grooming every 6 weeks.
  • Someone who will continue medicated baths, medications, and allergy free food to maintain skin health

Basil is a 10 year old, 14 lb female Shih Tzu mix.  She was brought to SBRET extremely matted with a skin and ear infection. It has taken several weeks, but with the help of The Itch Clinic she is doing much better. Her skin will need continued care with weekly baths, ear medication monthly and a limited ingredient diet (a list will be provided). The Itch clinic will be happy to provide a free consultation to answer questions and provide any further guidance to care for her skin long term.

When Basil came into SBRET, she adjusted to her foster home quickly. She gets along well with people and with the other 2 dogs and 2 cats in the household. When she meets new people and dogs she will initially bark, but settles down once she has checked them out.

Basil is a laid back little girl, who loves nothing more than to spend her day lying on a pile of pillows, hanging over the back of the couch.  She does well on a leash and loves to go for walks. She has a hoppy/skippy walk which has been checked  out by the vet and x-rayed with no reason found. She has no problem walking, jumping, and can go up and down stairs.

Basil does great with house training although any dog may have an accident when is first placed in a new home. She likes to go out every 3-4hrs and will let you know when that is! Basil is a good eater and will stick to her bowl if there are other pets being fed at the same time, but will growl and snap if someone tries to get in her bowl. She doesn’t like to share! Will be best to feed her separately.

She sleeps quietly all night in a kennel in my bedroom. She also rides well in a car. She is a sweet and loving little girl. We believe she will be happiest with another dog or someone home most of the time because she gets nervous left alone. She is not the happiest about having her harness or collar “snapped” into place or if someone rudely wakes her up. I will give you some pointers how I manage this

Basil was previously spayed. She has had a dental and surprisingly had no teeth removed. She is up to date on her vaccines, microchipped, and current on her heartworm and flea prevention. Her adoption fee is $100.00
