Adoption Area: East Tennessee
Bentley needs:
- No children younger than 10 years old
- No apartments or condos, since he can get barky at times
- Someone to take him outside every 2-3 hours during the day
- A small playful dog companion or a calm dog would be ideal
- Regular professional grooming
Bentley is an adorable 3-year-old, 8.5 pound, tan male Yorkie mix who has a lot of affection to give and joy to share. He loves to spend time with his person/people, whether snuggling up or racing around playing “Fetch” with a small toy. He can be timid and a little anxious at first with some people, typically men (possibly due to a history with a male owner who did not treat him right), but will typically warm up to them if they give him space to approach them when he feels comfortable. He loves food, so giving him a few small treats can sometimes accelerate the change from timid to affectionate.
Bentley’s hair should be brushed daily and will need to be groomed every 4-6 weeks. Treats may not be enough to diminish his anxiety at the groomer, where he hunkers down and gets very scared of the clippers and the blower. It may be helpful to give him a little Trazodone prior to grooming appointments, so discuss this with his vet, as needed.
Bentley will do best with a small-to-medium dog friend, who enjoys playing without getting overly excited to the point of play-biting. A small dog friend could also keep him company when his people are gone, since he gets anxious when left alone and will start to walk quickly in circles around the house, sometimes while also barking.
As long as Bentley is taken outside about every couple of hours during the day, he has not been having accidents in the house, though he should wear a belly band (we will provide one) for the first day or two when he visits a new house, since his instinct is to “mark” when first exposed to a new place. He enjoys going for walks on a leash and rides well in a car. He is excellent at sleeping all night in a crate, though would probably enjoy sleeping with his person too, if allowed.
Bentley has been neutered, is microchipped, and is up-to-date on all his vaccinations and preventatives. His adoption fee is $175.
