Adoption Area: East Tennessee
Blackjack needs:
- Leashing whenever doors open or he is allowed outside and/or secure fencing
- Adult home or one with children over 12 with someone home part of the day
- Regular professional grooming
Blackjack is a handsome 6 yr old, 8 pound Yorkie mix male who came to SBRET from a shelter. His name reflects his winning hand of health, personality, and behavior. His coat is a striking combination of black and tan with silver highlights. He is easy to comb, but since he is a Yorkie Mix, he will require regular combing/grooming.
He gets along well other dogs, cats, people, crate-time, dog food, walking on a leash, etc. He will require a brief warm-up period during introduction as with any dog, but he will bond deeply with his people and other pets. He does have a tendency to dart out doors or follow you out the door. We have been working on this problem by teaching “back” and making him reenter or reexit the house when he makes a mistake. His adoptive family can easily solve this issue by having an appropriate fenced area outside the door or making sure he is on a leash before opening doors. As with all small dogs, he should never be left outside alone.
He is doing excellent on potty training if taken out regularly. His potty habits have improved greatly from when he arrived as an intact male, but after his neuter he hasn’t marked inside for a while. Now he is pretty regular and predictable, but a belly band could be useful during the transition period. He walks on a leash very well, and he is becoming a wonderful walking companion. He’s great in a car with the use of a secure doggie belt/seat. He sleeps in a crate while you are out of the house and at night.
Because he is used to other dogs a companion dog would be an ideal friend for him. He is also used to most-of-the-day human companionship so if you are looking for a little sidekick, you may have found your match! If his people are home most of the day and can provide lots of contact, he would probably do fine as an only dog. He has not been tested with children, but teenagers would be fine since they can be trusted with opening doors, leashing when the door opens, and staying with him during outdoor trips.
Barking is usually not a problem even though he does bark occasionally, but he usually only barks when other dogs in the home bark. He is doing quite well learning to “Hush!”
He loves to be with his people and friends. Lying beside you on the couch or curled with you in a chair is like Las Vegas for him. He’s a super little guy, and the right home will make a winning combination.
If you think BlackJack could be the perfect dog for you, please contact SBRET. He is neutered, vaccinated, had a dental (lost 7 teeth), and current on flea/heartworm prevention. There is no gambling with this BlackJack…he’s definitely a winner! His adoption fee is $175.
