Adoption Area: East Tennessee
Chauncey needs:
- A home without stairs
- Shallow sills to enter and exit doors
- Continued daily joint supplement
- No young children
Chauncey is a 10+ yrs old, 7-8 lb Maltese mix male who came in as a stray to a shelter. He earned his name because of his calm, royal demeanor which might indicate royal ancestors? 😉 He has great people, dog, and cat skills. Everyone who meets him has instant “Love at First Sight” syndrome. His light buff-colored coat will be gorgeous once it grows out and covers his recent surgical area (his current short cut makes him cuter than a bug-in-a-rug plus hides any differences in his coat). Regular professional grooming will be a must in the future because his coat grows quickly.
He quickly bonds with his people and will follow you around the house. Other dog/cat buddies would be wonderful for him but if someone is home most of the time, he would probably be happy on his own. He eats well and is happy in a crate while you are out of the house and at night. In fact, he learned the command, “Go to bed,” in just a few days at his foster home and also his new name. He is such a smart boy! He loves attention and praise a lot! He rides well in a crate or doggie-restraint in the car. If he is taken out to potty regularly and is given positive praise, he should have no problem with potty habits. He loves to sit in a chair/couch and cuddle right up next to you, BUT he needs someone who will pick him up and set him down carefully. He should never be left to jump down on his own. The same procedure is true for steps. Why? When he arrived at SBRET, he was unable to put weight on his right front leg. Our vets determined that there was severe arthritis in the shoulder (probably due to an old injury) and decided to remove his leg/scapula. He is currently taking a supplement every day to enhance his recovery and maintain good joint health (less than $10 monthly). This is why a one-level home with low door sills would be perfect! He also had his dental during the surgery and several teeth were removed. He eats very well on ¼ cup dry kibble twice a day and should not gain weight in order to maintain balance and joint health.
He will not make a good walking/hiking companion since he is not really active…walking about the house seems to be the perfect exercise level for him. If you’re looking for a well-adjusted, easy-going Love Bucket who loves to put his arm up on your chest and gaze into your eyes, he’s the man for you! He is currently vaccinated (rabies, bordatella, DAPP), on heartworm and flea treatment, microchipped, and neutered. His adoption is fee is $100. Where else could you adopt your very own “royal” buddy?
