Our Number One Need is To Have More Foster Homes

Small Breed Rescue of East Tennessee is an all-volunteer organization based in the Knoxville area. We do not have a shelter facility and all our rescues stay in foster homes until they are adopted. Even if we had all the money in the world, we cannot rescue these precious pups without foster homes!

We often get asked.. “How can you bear to let the dog go – I would get too attached to it!” It is true – it is always a bit sad to see our rescues go. But the SBRET adoption process is so careful and thorough, that by the time a dog is adopted out, we know it’s going to a great place! We often see these pups come in dirty, scared, and sometimes abused, and then we get to see them blossom into happy, healthy dogs they were meant to be. One of the best feelings in the world is to see your foster dog in a loving forever home, and knowing that by placing that dog, you now have room to help another small dog in need of a fresh start!

What We Need from Foster Homes:

Be located in the Knoxville area
Food, shelter, and lots of love for a dog that has been neglected or abandoned
Socialization and basic training
Ability to bring your foster dog to at least 2 adoptions events a month held on weekends to help them get adopted

What SBRET Provides:

All necessary vet visits and expenses
Crates, ex-pens, collar, harness, leash, toys, “outfits”, we’ve got it all!
A support network of SBRET volunteers

Steps to Become a Foster Home:

Fill out an online Foster Application
We will do a vet reference check to make sure that current pets are spayed/neutered, up-to-date on their shots, and on heartworm prevention.
We will then contact you to set up a home visit during which we will give you an overview of the rescue organization, your responsibilities, and we will answer any questions you may have.
You will likely receive your first foster dog soon after the home visit!

Q. What if I have other pets?

A. As long as your family pets get along with other dogs, then they may actually enjoy the company! Your pets can help your foster dog “learn the ropes in your house” and even with house training.

Q. How long will I have my foster?

A. This depends on the dog and the situation. It may only be a couple of weeks, or it could be a few months, or even longer in some cases. The more you work with your foster and the more adoption events you attend, the faster they will find their forever home!

Q. What if my foster dog isn't working out?

A. If there is a problem with your placement, we will move the dog to a new foster home. It is in everyone’s best interest to place foster dogs in appropriate home situations and we work hard to make sure that happens.
