Small Breed Rescue
of East Tennessee

I have three dogs of my own and two foster dogs. That means when it’s cold outside, I’m not just thinking ugh, it’s freezing — I’m thinking this is going to take a while.

So let’s talk honestly about how potty time works when it’s cold and you don’t want to stand outside shivering while five dogs figure out their life choices.

Yes, They Still Have to Go

Cold weather does not cancel dog biology. I’ve checked. Even when it’s freezing, snowing, or just plain miserable, dogs still need to potty. But the way we handle it changes.

Pee Pads Are Part of the Plan

Yes, I use pee pads — especially with foster dogs and seniors.

In my house, pee pads are:

• a backup

• a training tool

• and sometimes a sanity saver

Small dogs, older dogs, and dogs who are new to my house don’t always do well rushing outside in the cold. Pee pads give them a clear, safe option inside so nobody is stressed (including me).

They’re always in the same spot. That part matters. Dogs like consistency, especially fosters who are still figuring things out.

Outside Is Fast and On-Leash

When we do go outside, it’s not a leisurely stroll.

Leashes go on — even in the fenced yard.

Why?

• Dogs get distracted

• Cold makes them weird

• And I don’t have time for snow zoomies when everyone just needs to pee

It’s in, out, done. Everybody back inside where it’s warm.

It’s Usually a Mix of Both

With five dogs, flexibility is key. Some days we go outside. Some days we rely on pee pads. Some dogs prefer one over the other.

And you know what? That’s okay. Dogs adapt really well when the routine makes sense and you’re consistent.

Does This Confuse Them?

Nope. Dogs don’t sit around questioning the rules. They learn:

• this is where I can go

• this is what gets praise

• this is how this house works

That clarity is especially important for foster dogs who are learning everything from scratch.

The Honest Truth

Having multiple dogs — especially fosters — means you do what works.

Good dog care isn’t about perfection or standing outside freezing just to prove a point. It’s about meeting their needs safely, kindly, and realistically.

Warm house.

Clean floors.

Dogs who know where to potty.

That’s a win in my book. 🐾
