In Loving Memory
Lacy was a sweet little 1 year old Pekingese mix that we rescued from an area shelter in February 2004. She was surrendered to the shelter because a household member had allergies. Lacy was SO scared and a little snappy at the shelter, so the shelter would only release her to rescue. Once she was in a home environment Lacy was the sweetest little dog you could ever ask for. On 2/27 Lacy became ill a couple of days after a routine surgery to be spayed. We took her to the vet on Friday 2/26, but we received the sad and unexpected news on Saturday evening, 2/28, that Lacy had passed away. We were so upset by Lacy’s passing, not only because we had lost her, but because she had died alone in a cage, where she was so frightened. We knew then and we know now it was for her own good – but we are tormented by the fact that she did not. And we are horrified by the fact that she died alone in a cage – back where she started from at the shelter – abandoned by the only family she had ever known. Did she think we had abandoned her too? We know in our mind that she probably thought we had, but in our heart we hope somehow she knew we did not. Regardless – the vision of her alone and scared like this will haunt us forever. We hope you can now have peace and love, little Lacy, and are running and playing at the Rainbow Bridge. We love you and we miss you.
** Necropsy Results: The necropsy results indicated bleeding at the site of the ovarian incision (there appeared to be no surgical error). One hypothesis is that the severe vomiting and resulting contractions of the muscles ripped the internal stitching of the ovary. Lacy did also test positive for parvovirus (parvo), so this appears to have been cause of the vomiting. It is horrifying to us that Lacy’s death could have easily been prevented by a simple and inexpensive vaccination. Lacy would still be with us today if the owners who so thoughtlessly dumped her at the shelter, had bothered to get her vaccinated. We can only hope that these people never opt to get another animal, as they do not deserve the love and devotion that these gentle creatures provide.
