In Loving Memory
Sad Update (10/27/06):
Patrick is no longer with us. He died last night at a Nashville animal ER after having 8 very violent seizures. He was not recovering in between the episodes and was in a lot of distress at the Pet ER. Our vet had diagnosed Patrick with liver shunt earlier in the week. We were hoping that his seizures could be controlled by diet and meds but that was not happening. The animal ER staff couldn’t do anything to help him, and he was just too miserable to let it go on any longer. We are comforted by the fact that Patrick was truely loved and spoiled rotten in his foster home for the last weeks of his life. His foster dad loved him dearly for the short time he had him.
Hi! My name isĀ Patrick, and I’m a 5 pound male Pomeranian that came from a local shelter. The vet says my age is uncertain and thinks I’m probably between 6 and 9 years old even though my foster dad thinks I look like a puppy.
I absolutely love to hang out inside with my people or just by myself, lying on discarded clothes. Everyone says I’m the cutest thing they’ve ever seen, and when outside, I love to meet new people. Toys are boring, and I don’t understand why people keep throwing them around me. Then they stare at me, as if I should throw it back – I don’t have hands people!! How about if we just snuggled, instead of throwing these strange things?
When I first arrived at my foster home, I was very shy and I did not interact much with my foster dad. After a few days, I began following my foster dad around and discovered my all-time favorite thing … jeans. My foster dad occasionally leaves his jeans on the floor, and I love to nap on them! The first night, I slept on a big fluffy blanket in a crate. I was scared at first, but now I don’t mind the crate at all. If I need to get out (because I’m thirsty or need to go to the bathroom), I bark a few times so that I can be let out. Until yesterday, I didn’t make a single mess in the house, but my foster dad waited a little too long to take me out. It’s not my fault – I couldn’t hold it any longer. I felt really bad, and don’t want to do it again, but you have to remember that good house training involves training me and my person. I’ll usually stand by the door and scratch on it to let people know I need to go out.
My foster dad is teaching me to sit, and I’m coming along! Dad says that I may have something called ‘selective hearing’, but he also feels like I may be truly hard of hearing. I was just groomed, and I loved it!!
I’ve not seen one of those ‘cat’ things, but I did meet another couple of dogs. They were OK and kind of interesting, but I discovered that I don’t like males and tend to irritate females. I’ve decided that I like being the only canine baby in the house. Of course I might change my mind if I met another dog that was just my type.
