Small Breed Rescue
of East Tennessee

Our dog rescue is foster-based because we believe it offers the best chance for dogs to thrive while they await their forever homes. Instead of keeping them in a noisy, overcrowded shelter, we place them in loving foster homes where they can experience real family life. This makes a huge difference for their well-being. The collaboration between dog rescues and animal shelters can be mutually beneficial and helps to improve the lives of the animals they care for.  If a shelter has a dog that is harder to adopt out (due to age, health issues, or temperament), they might partner with a dog rescue that has the resources or specialized knowledge to help these dogs find homes.

In a foster home, we can get to know each dog on a deeper level—what makes them happy, what they’re afraid of, how they behave around other pets or children. This helps us give them the individualized care they need, whether that’s training, medical attention, or just some extra love to help them adjust.  Shelters and rescues may collaborate on getting animals medical treatment. Rescues can help with funding for surgeries or medications that might not be available through the shelter.

It also means less stress for the dogs. Shelters can be loud and overwhelming, which can really affect a dog’s mental health. In foster care, they get a peaceful, calm environment that allows them to heal and grow. Plus, fosters help with things like housebreaking, leash training, or overcoming anxiety, which makes the dog more adoptable and ready for their new family.

We need more foster homes to save more lives!  Foster homes play a critical role in the success of dog rescues. Shelters can only house a limited number of animals at a time, and without enough foster homes, many dogs are at risk of being overlooked or facing euthanasia due to overcrowding. We, being foster based can provide a temporary, safe environment where dogs can receive the love, attention, and care they need to thrive while they wait for their forever homes.

With more foster homes, we can bring in more dogs and place them with the right foster family for their needs. It’s a flexible and cost-effective way to operate.  Our rescue provides the foster families with food, beds, leashes and collars.  We are also able to provide guidance and support to our foster families navigating the special needs of some of our rescues.

But most importantly, it allows us to match each dog with the right adopter. Since we know our dogs so well, we can help potential adopters find a dog that fits their lifestyle perfectly, which increases the chances of a lasting, happy relationship.

So, being foster-based isn’t just about providing a home for a dog; it’s about giving them the best opportunity for a successful, joyful life.  If you are interested in more information regarding providing a foster home, please see our page on our website about fostering.  You will find the foster application there too. 🙂
